Leading a spa that is set right above the idyllic Shotover River is definitely an added bonus to the responsibilities this destination requires. We sat down with Lauren, the Spa Manager at Onsen Hot Pools to get some insight about the esteemed retreat.

What do you believe sets apart Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa ?

It has to be the setting. Our exclusive use of cedar-lined hot pools overlook picturesque mountains and the Shotover River; the breathtaking views are world renowned.

Onsen is also home to a tranquil day spa, with the option to book either our cedar hot pools or a hot tub and spa package, we offer the ultimate in relaxation.

What made you pursue a career in hospitality and wellness?

I’m passionate about having a positive impact on other people lives. I love working in an environment that delivers luxurious experiences dedicated to improving a person’s well- being.

What are your favourite aspects of Onsen Hot Pools Retreat & Day Spa ?

My favourite aspect is the Serenity Soak Experience.

Our guests unwind with a 45-minute soak in an oval hot tub set on their own deck, complete with a complimentary drink, snack and choice of bath scents or salts. The unique experience continues when they move inside to the tranquil day spa room for a face or body treatment of their choice. It’s pure indulgence.

Have you felt improvements at the Retreat post-pandemic?

We took the opportunity the pandemic offered to slow down and look closely at all areas of our business. We poured time and energy into making sure all of our experiences are of the highest quality, including our extensive range of face and body treatments.

The complex underwent major renovations in 2019/2020 which many guests have not yet had the opportunity to experience, we look forward to sharing our world class facility post- pandemic.

Could you give us some insight into the esteemed Original Onsen experience the Spa offers?

Our idyllic cedar-lined hot tubs have long been a highlight for Queenstown visitors and locals alike. A unique kiwi twist on a Japanese bathing tradition, guests have exclusive use of a classic cedar tub for 60 minutes as they kick back and relax. Guests receive a complimentary drink and snack to enjoy in the pool while taking in the breathtaking views.

What do you believe are the motivating factors for a successful staff?

The most motivating factor for our staff is the feedback we receive from our lovely guests. Knowing that we have made our guests' experience so special is really rewarding and something that we are exceptionally proud of.
